PLAYSTATION COMING TO PC AND MOBILE

PlayStation on PC

PlayStation in a post on its company blog, announced the release of a new app that will bring its library of over 400 exclusive games to Windows and Mac PCs this fall. In the same announcement, the company also introduced its new DualShock 4 USB Wireless Adaptor, a micro-USB key that will allow players to connect their controllers to their computers wirelessly. According to the post, the $24.99 device will "enable every feature of the controller you know and love: buttons, analog sticks, touch pad, light bar, motion sensors, vibration, and stereo headset jack — as long as the gaming application supports these features." Both the app and the device will begin their rollouts in Europe in September, with plans to expand to the United States and Canada shortly after. There has been no word yet on when the app is expected to reach Asia and Australia.

This announcement comes amidst a slew of new innovations being explored by Sony this year. Earlier, Remote Play, .Sony announced new features coming to its PlayStation 4 console including Remote Play on Macs and PCs, a streaming feature that makes it easy to control PS4 consoles from a computer.

Sony's next major update for the PlayStation 4, version 3.5, will bring a slew of new features including Remote Play on Windows PC and Mac. Previously, users could only use the PS4's Remote Play feature with the PS Vita handheld. Microsoft's Xbox One already has game streaming for Windows 10, but does not offer the service for Mac users, giving Sony a leg up.
In addition to adding Remote Play support for PC and Mac, Sony's PlayStation update includes several new social features and Dailymotion support. "Want to know the moment your friends come online? With this update, you can," said Sony. Users can also choose to appear offline or "go incognito;" this can be automatically turned on when you log-in or can be selected from your Profile at any time. Other new social features include User Scheduled Events and Play Together, which make it easier to play online with friends.

SONY GOES MOBILE

PlayStation on Mobile

Later that month, Sony announced a corporate name change and a plan to produce mobile games.
It's corporate rebranding time over at Sony's entertainment division, which, as of Friday, is changing its name from Sony Computer Entertainment to Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. Additionally, Sony also published an official press release announcing "the formation of ForwardWorks Corporation (ForwardWorks), a new company that is aimed to deploy new services toward the ever-expanding smart device market." ForwardWorks, which will kick off on April 1, will "leverage the intellectual property of the numerous PlayStation-dedicated software titles and its gaming characters," and will use PlayStation's game development knowledge to create games optimized for Android and iOS devices. ForwardWorks will only be creating games for users in Japan and Asia, though this may change over time.

Sony previously attempted to move into the mobile games market with PlayStation Mobile, but this venture proved unsuccessful. PlayStation Mobile, which was available for the PlayStation Vita (and select Android devices, including Sony's Xperia smartphones and tablets), shuttered its doors in September 2015, after it failed to gain traction with users. The platform looked to bridge the gap between independent mobile games and the handheld console, and to make PS1 games available on mobile, but it was not enough to woo users. Sony was also forced to close its Music Unlimited service last year. The music service had a poor UI, too many competitors, and a limited music selection. Time will tell if ForwardWorks' content will fare better than PlayStation Mobile.
